4 Ounces Unsweetened Chocolate 1 1/4 Cup All-Purpose Flour 2/3 Cup Shortening 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder 2 Cups Sugar 1 Teaspoon Salt 4 Eggs 1 Cup Nuts, Chopped (Optional) 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13x9x2 inch baking pan. Heat chocolate and shortening in a 3-quart saucepan over low heat until melted; remove from heat. Stir in sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Mix in remaining ingredients. Spread in pan. Bake until brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan, about 30 minutes. Do not overbake. Cool slightly, spread with Glossy Chocolate Frosting (below), if desired. Cool completely; cut into 2x1.5-inch bars. Makes 3 dozen cookies.
Glossy Chocolate Frosting:
3 Ounces Unsweetened Chocolate 1/3 Cup Milk
3 Tablespoons Shortening 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2 Cups Powdered Sugar 1/2 Cup Nuts, Chopped (Optional)
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
Heat chocolate and shortening over low heat until melted. Stir in powdered sugar, salt, milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Place pan of frosting in an ice-water bath. Continue beating until smooth and of spreading consistency. Stir in nuts.
